Obiettivi formativi

The aim of the course is to present the essential mathematical instruments that can be used in economic and financial applications, with particular reference to those that are used at the business level.

1) Knowledge and understanding ability.

The course allows to acquire the knowledge of the traditional instruments of mathematical analysis and of the main problems of economic and business nature in which these instruments can be applied.

2) Capability to apply knowledge and understanding

The course allows to acquire the ability of using basic mathematical techniques for the analysis of problems concerning economic and business sciences, and to use such techniques for the construction of mathematical models used in the solution of problems.

3) Capability to approach the subject in a critical manner

The course allows to acquire the ability of interpreting in an autonomous way the main economic and business problems, and to propose quantitative techniques to face such themes in a formal way.

4) Communication abilities

The course allows to acquire the ability of communicating the most common mathematical techniques used in economic and business sciences.

5) Learning ability

The course gives the instruments that allow an updating of the competences for the solution of problems of economic and business nature.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento

Ordinari exams

The exam consists in a compulsory written part (that will last one hour and a half) and an optional oral part.The written part gives right to a maximum of 27 points.Written+optional oral ( it will last h:5 )

Programma

Elements of logic and of set theory.
Connectives and quantifiers, implications, equivalences. Sets, subsets, set operations, cartesian product, sets of numbers. Real line, intervals, neighbourhoods.

Functions of one variable.
Definition of domain, codomain, imagine, graphic of a function. Elementary functions. Injective, surjective, inverse, composite functions. Bounded, monotone, convex functions. Points of optimum of a function. Economic and financial applications.

Limits and continuity.
Notion of limit. Computation of limits and fundamental theorems. Important limits and indeterminate forms. Continuous functions and theorems. Economic and financial applications.

Differential calculus and applications.
Notion of derivative and its geometrical meaning, higher-order derivatives, rules of derivation. Derivatives of elementary functions, of inverse functions and of composite functions. Theorems of differential calculus. Taylor's formula and its use. Problems of optimum. Study of functions. Economic and business applications.
